Taking your bicycle on the S-Bahn

Would you like to combine cycling and S-Bahn travel? You're welcome! To ensure a relaxed journey for you and other passengers, there are a few rules for taking bicycles on board. Here you will find all the information regarding exclusion times, tickets, and safety.

Taking your bike with you

  • If starting your journey within the MVV entire network, you must purchase and validate an MVV Bicycle Day Pass for each bicycle or e-bike you bring along.
  • Children up to the age of 12 may only bring their bicycle if they are with an accompanying person (at least 15 years old). Each child under 12 years of age with a bicycle must be accompanied by their own individual escort.
  • Recumbent bikes, cargo bikes, and bicycle trailers are generally not permitted on the S-Bahn, unless the trailer is being used for the transportation of children. In this case, please ensure that any protruding parts are removed and that the trailer is equipped with a parking brake. For safety reasons, children must not be seated in the trailer or child seat while boarding or alighting the train.

The Restriction (Exclusion Period):

In general, you can take your bicycle with you on the Munich S-Bahn almost around the clock. However, please take note of peak travel times (rush hour).

Exclusion period: From Monday to Friday, bicycles are not permitted on board between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Good news – No restrictions apply:

  • On weekends and public holidays
  • During all Bavarian school holidays (Christmas, Fasching/Carnival, Easter, Pentecost, summer, and autumn). During these periods, you are free to travel at any time.

Tip: Folded bicycles as well as children’s bikes (up to 12.5 inches) are considered pieces of luggage and are not affected by the exclusion period.

answer

In our modernized ET 423 trains, there are multi-purpose areas at the beginning and end of each train section. These are reserved for wheelchair users, strollers, and bicycles, and are marked with large pictograms on the exterior of the S-Bahn as well as on the doors and window panes.

The following priority order applies when boarding:

1. Wheelchair users

2. Strollers

3. Bikes

Note: On crowded S-Bahn trains outside of the exclusion periods, the train staff will decide whether bicycles can be taken on board.

answers

In our older S-Bahn trains (ET 420), bicycles may also be taken in the areas at the beginning and end of the train, provided that transport is not excluded by pictograms next to the entrance doors.

answer

To save space in the multi-purpose area, we ask that you always park bicycles in an alternating (staggered) fashion.
